Benefits of Maths Olympiad for Class 10

1. Board exam revision in disguise. Quadratic equations, arithmetic progressions, trigonometry and probability are all part of Class 10 school Maths. Olympiad problems on them double as tough revision.

2. A bridge to entrance exams. Many engineering and science entrance tests build on Class 10 algebra and trigonometry. Facing timed, application-based questions now is useful practice for those later exams.

3. Understanding, not memorising. One Class 10 testimonial says the Olympiads helped the writer realise their potential in a conceptual manner, and recommends that everybody give it a try.

4. A record worth keeping. Medals, ranks and certificates from Class 10 are a neat addition to a student's portfolio. Another Class 10 review says CREST gave good ground to improve skills.

How to prepare for Class 10 Maths Olympiad?

In Class 10 your time is split between school, board preparation and perhaps coaching. The good news is that the Olympiad syllabus overlaps heavily with school Maths, so the same study counts twice.

Build a weekly timetable in advance. A rank holder who topped CMO internationally in Class 10 summed up his method simply: stick to a timetable prepared in advance, keeping all your other priorities in view (read his Hall of Fame profile).

Give extra hours to the chapters that are new this year. Practise Quadratic Equations by factorisation and by the formula. Write out the AP formulas and solve a few sum-of-terms problems daily. Memorise the trigonometric ratios of standard angles, then move on to heights and distances in Some Applications of Trigonometry. Probability and Statistics questions are short and worth getting right every time.

Start timed practice early with the class 10 Maths Olympiad sample papers. You have about 72 seconds per question (50 in 60 minutes). Don't get stuck on a long Surface Areas and Volumes calculation; with no negative marking, pick the likeliest option and move on.

The class 10 Maths Olympiad books, including the CREST workbook, are useful for the last few weeks. Take the free practice test to check your webcam and browser.
