a. Register for the English Olympiad for class 5 through your school, or individually on the CREST website.
b. Your school can be on any recognised board, such as CBSE, ICSE, IB or a State Board. International participants are welcome too.
c. The English Olympiad for class 5 has a Level 1 and a Level 2. Level 2 takes the top 55.56% of Class 5 students from Level 1, and also the leading 3 school-registered students of any school entering more than 25 in Class 5.
d. You sit the exam alone at home. The webcam watches the whole session, so keep your face in view and keep phones, calculators and other devices away.
e. Device check: a laptop, desktop or tablet with a screen larger than 11.5 inches (Windows 8 or above, a Mac or an iPad, but not a phone), a webcam, a stable internet connection and the most recent Google Chrome (Edge or Firefox will do too; Safari is not supported). Slots must be booked at least 2 days ahead.
1. Idioms and phrasal verbs. Class 5 adds both to the list, and they are exactly the bits of English that make reading feel natural. "Look after", "give up" and "a piece of cake" stop being puzzles.
2. A first go at voice and reported speech. Active-Passive Voice and Reported Speech join the Class 5 list, two topics that teach children to rewrite a sentence without changing its meaning.
3. Familiar topics, bent a little. A Class 5 testimonial singles out one thing for praise: the questions belong to the same class, but each one comes with a slight twist.
4. A clear benchmark. The paper grows to 50 questions this year, and ranks are given by zone and internationally, so students can see how their English compares with peers from 60+ countries.

Class 5 is a big step. Compared with Class 4, Idioms, Homonyms and Homophones, Phrasal Verbs, Active-Passive Voice and Reported Speech are new. Reading questions now draw on news headlines, letters, news reports and menu cards, and on situations such as requests, refusals and apologies. Synonyms, Antonyms, Contractions, Jumbled Words, Basic Questions and the Spoken and Written Expressions topic are not in the Class 5 list.
Below is Section 1 as the class 5 English Olympiad syllabus gives it, topic by topic:
Achievers Section: ten Higher Order Thinking Questions, two marks apiece, all set within the Class 5 topics above.
This is the year the paper grows to 50 questions, still in 60 minutes but now worth 60 marks, because 40 English Language questions earn 1 mark each and the 10 Achievers questions earn 2. Level 2 is identical, and a wrong answer simply earns nothing.

With the paper now 50 questions long, Class 5 needs a steadier plan: eight weeks, 30 to 40 minutes a session, five days a week. Most of it you can manage yourself, with a parent checking in once a week.
Start with the new topics. Collect ten idioms and ten phrasal verbs a week and use each one in a sentence of your own. Change sentences from active to passive ("The dog chased the cat" becomes "The cat was chased by the dog") and turn a dialogue into reported speech. Read one newspaper headline each morning and say what the full story is probably about. Look at a restaurant menu and answer quick questions on prices and dishes.
Then solve the class 5 English Olympiad sample papers, followed by the previous year paper from the table below. A Class 5 participant who reached International Rank 1 in the English Olympiad in 2019-20 is profiled on the CREST Hall of Fame.
Timing changes this year. You get 72 seconds per question (50 in 60 minutes), noticeably less than the 1 minute 43 seconds of Class 4. A Class 5 review on the testimonials page praises the questions and calls the time limit nice, so the pace is workable with practice. Do at least three full timed papers and the free practice test.
Use the Class 5 workbook from CREST (in the table) for topic practice. CREST lists Olympiad Success as its official preparation partner, and its class 5 English Olympiad worksheets are sold alongside Level 1 mock tests.
