CREST International Olympiad (CIDO) exam is conducted globally where students from 6000+ schools participate. Students across the globe participate extensively to make their mark in the International Drawing Olympiad for class 8. Aiming for Sustainable Cities and Communities is one of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), more specifically SDG 11. This goal strives to make cities and human settlements more inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable by 2030. SDG 11 encourages inclusive urban development by ensuring that cities and human settlements are designed and managed to fulfil the needs of all people, particularly the most vulnerable and marginalised populations. This entails providing appropriate housing, basic services, public areas, transportation, and infrastructure to all.

a. Class 8 artists of any board, whether CBSE, ICSE, IB or a State Board, at home or abroad, can all take part, whether their school signs them up or they do it themselves.

b. If you register individually, the exam happens at home on your own laptop or desktop or tablet, which must have a webcam and a screen over 11.5 inches. CREST recommends a dependable internet connection and the latest Google Chrome; Edge and Firefox are fine too, Safari is not, and a phone cannot be the exam device.

c. Expect to draw alone, with your face in the camera frame throughout.

d. Class 8 draws once, in Level 1 only. Slots should be booked a minimum of 2 days before the exam, an email or SMS reminder lands 2-3 days beforehand, and every slot change costs Rs. 40.

1. Designing a city. Class 8 follows UN SDG 11 - Sustainable Cities and Communities. Pedestrian-Friendly Streets, a green city and sustainable transport ask you to plan streets, buildings and people in one frame.

2. A first landscape. Landscape - Green City Future City is the first landscape topic in CIDO, a chance to work on perspective and depth.

3. Tests on your schedule. Students choose the time of their tests, which one Class 8 testimonial singles out as what makes CREST unique.

1. International Drawing Olympiad Individual registrations by students are accepted.

2. Students who have not done registration through school will have to take exams from home. The individual participating should have a computer or laptop with a webcam and a good internet facility. The exam is monitored through a webcam.

Cities are the subject of the International Drawing Olympiad syllabus for Class 8. The goal is UN SDG 11 - Sustainable Cities and Communities, and the eight topics are set out below.

As CREST explains it, SDG 11 aims to make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable by 2030, with suitable housing, basic services, public spaces, transport and infrastructure for everyone, especially the most vulnerable. The Class 8 topics sit squarely in that picture: streets for walkers, cleaner transport, water management and greener city planning.

SDG 11 is set for the first time in Class 8. Landscape - Green City Future City is the first landscape topic, and Green City also appears as a topic on its own. There are three posters, the same number as in Class 7.

The two green-city topics differ in scale: the landscape is a wide view of a whole future city, while Green City can come in closer, to one street or square. Four Sustainable Transport on Road puts a number in the title, so four kinds of transport should be visible. Poster - City Superhero Squad asks for characters, and Sustainable Water Management for a system that shows where water comes from and where it goes. Pedestrian-Friendly Streets puts people on foot first, so wide pavements, crossings and shade belong in it, and Poster - Waste Reduction can sit at street level too.

The exam: one drawing, one hour, 100 marks at most, and no Level 2.

Neatness and Composition is marked out of 30 and Originality/Creativity out of 20; Theme Adherence and Quality of Scan are out of 15 each, Title/Caption and Message Conveyed out of 10 each. Layout, balance, overall impact, line quality, colouring and shading, detailing and craftsmanship all fall under Neatness and Composition. A busy city scene needs good balance so it does not feel crowded or empty.

Materials: HB pencil, sharpener, eraser and drawing board; a white A4 sheet (210 mm by 297 mm); colours as needed, such as pencil colours, oil pastels, crayons, or pastel colours with a brush.

Border and details: draw a 1 cm border and stay inside it; write your name, CREST ID and class outside the border at the bottom left.

During the exam: keep the surface clean and flat and your pencil lines sharp, with no broken lines or stray marks. Hold the drawing up to the camera every 7-10 minutes so it can be tracked; not doing so may lead to disqualification.

Upload: photograph just the drawing on a plain background in high resolution, or scan it with no grey shades or scanner marks (Adobe Scan or Microsoft Office Scan are suggested). The file must be .jpg, .jpeg or .png and not more than 10 MB, and it must be uploaded within 5 minutes of exam submission, failing which you may be disqualified.

The exam fee is INR 275 for students studying and enrolling from India. For students studying and residing outside of India, the fee is USD 15.

Read through the class 8 International Drawing Olympiad syllabus and note which topics are scenes and which are posters.

The scenes need perspective. Practise a one-point street for Pedestrian-Friendly Streets, with buildings shrinking towards a single point. Use the same idea for Landscape - Green City Future City and Green City, adding rooftop gardens, solar panels and trees. Four Sustainable Transport on Road means four vehicles, such as a bus, a bicycle, an electric car and a tram, so plan space for all four.

Sustainable Water Management can show rainwater flowing from roofs into a tank. For the three posters (Waste Reduction, City Superhero Squad and SDG 11 Sustainable Cities And Communities), keep the title within 6 words, inside the border.

Your rehearsal should be a full hour on one topic from the Class 8 International Drawing Olympiad sample papers, with the sheet raised to the webcam every 7-10 minutes and a proper photo or scan at the end. After two or three such hours, take the free trial: it behaves like the main exam, and your drawing gets feedback.

The class 8 International Drawing Olympiad results need up to a month after the last answer key date to come through. Sign in with your registered credentials and the score shows in the dashboard's performance section.

In the results, students are ranked by marks, then by the time taken, and finally by age, younger first, and final ranks are normalised across days and sessions. Where there is any doubt, the Academic Council has the final word.

Drawings in the top 25% bring their artists a Merit Certificate, while drawings placed between 25% and 50% earn an Honourable Mention certificate online. Medals depend on percentile, zonal rank and school rank, as set out on the CREST awards page.

In Class 9 the theme becomes UN SDG 12 - Reasonable Consumption and Production, with six posters.

3. All participants with a percentile of 93 to 96 will get a silver medal.
4. All participants with a percentile of 90 to 93 will receive a bronze medal.
