Exam Highlights for Class 6 CREST Mental Maths Olympiad (CMMO)

a. Whatever board you study under, and wherever you live, you can sit the CREST Mental Maths Olympiad for class 6 if you are in Class 6.

b. Is your school one of the 6000-plus whose pupils sit CREST exams? Ask there first. If it is not, you can sign up on your own through the CREST website.

c. The paper is yours alone, taken at home. Your whole face needs to stay in the webcam picture, with calculators and phones nowhere near the desk.

e. Level 2 seats go to the top 66.67% of Class 6 students in Level 1 and to the three top school-registered scorers of any school that enters over 25 in your class.

f. Change of plan? Moving a booked slot is possible for Rs. 40 a time.

Nine topics make up the Mental Maths Olympiad syllabus for class 6:

Compared with Class 5 there is exactly one change: Algebra is added. According to the Class 6 prep guide, it covers variables and constants and algebraic expressions. The remaining eight come straight across from Class 5, and so does their detail in the guide: Integers means addition and subtraction on a number line and the properties of integers, while Data Handling and Symmetry means pictographs, line graphs and bar graphs together with point and reflection symmetry.

The format is 100 multiple-choice questions in a 60-minute paper worth 120 marks. The Basique section holds 80 of them for 1 mark each, the Avance section 20 for 2 marks each. Level 2 is built on the same plan, and a wrong pick is not penalised.

With 36 seconds per question the aim is to recognise each type of question at once and know the quickest route.

Make a shortcut notebook. Write down divisibility rules, prime factorisation, H.C.F. and L.C.M. methods, common fraction-decimal-percentage pairs such as 1/4 = 0.25 = 25%, and the ratio method for sharing an amount. Read it through every day.

Practise the new Algebra through substitution: if x = 4, what is 3x + 2? Do ten of these a day until they are instant.

The class 6 Mental Maths sample papers mix easy and tricky items: how many end points a ray has, sharing 180 students in the ratio 3 : 4 : 5, and a father 5 times his son's age with a total of 36. Time yourself; if one takes longer than a minute, move on and come back.
