How do scientists know the climate is changing? Temperature records, melting ice and rising sea levels all point to the same answer. The International Green Warrior Olympiad (IGWO) for Class 9 encourages students to work with this kind of evidence, to understand the science behind environmental problems and to judge which solutions hold up.
At fourteen, students are ready for more detailed ideas. The Class 9 syllabus explains how greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane trap heat, why ocean acidification threatens marine life, and how forests store carbon and help regulate the climate. It also introduces newer subjects like e-waste, the environmental cost of the phones, laptops and other electronic devices we use every day.
The exam is arranged around eight themes connected with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), ranging from Clean Water and Sanitation and Affordable and Clean Energy to Life Below Water, Life On Land and Food Security and Agriculture. In the cities theme, students learn about rainwater harvesting, greywater recycling and the effects of rapid urbanisation, while the consumption theme moves on to the 5 R’s: reduce, reuse, recycle, repurpose and refuse.
Studying these topics helps Class 9 students make sense of the reports and debates they come across in the news and online. It ties in closely with their science and social science lessons, and it encourages careful, evidence-based thinking about issues such as sustainable fishing, food waste and responsible shopping.
CREST Olympiads, the World’s Largest Online Olympiad Exam, draws participants from more than 6000 schools in over 60 countries. The Class 9 IGWO gives them a common way to measure their environmental knowledge against peers worldwide.
The Olympiad assesses how clearly Class 9 students understand environmental science, how they interpret evidence and how they apply it to real-world choices.
Other Important Information:
a) English is the language of the exam.
b) Questions span 8 of the 17 UN SDGs, looking at the links between them and at the responsibilities of individuals, communities and nations.
c) Students sit the exam online at home under webcam proctoring, using a laptop, desktop or tablet fitted with a webcam. Mobile phones are not allowed.

Start Class 9 preparation by reading the syllabus and sorting its topics into causes, impacts and solutions. For climate, for instance, note the greenhouse gases involved, the evidence of warming and the ways in which societies can respond. Do the same for water pollution, e-waste and threats to life underwater.
Practise reading simple graphs and data, such as temperature trends or water quality readings, as this develops the evidence-based thinking that runs through the Class 9 syllabus. Revise key terms often, and attempt sample papers in timed, one-hour sittings to improve accuracy and pace.
