Benefits of Maths Olympiad for Class 2

1. Thinking, not just counting. With 3-digit numbers, pictographs and patterns, Class 2 questions ask children to read a picture or a table and work something out from it.

2. Independence. Taking a timed test alone at seven is a real step. Children learn to read the question themselves, decide, and move on.

3. Concepts over memory. A published Class 2 testimonial says the Olympiad encourages a strong conceptual foundation and a practical understanding of the ideas behind each topic.

4. Their work gets noticed. Students who secure ranks are recognised with medals and certificates, and Class 2 is where ranking begins, so a child can see how they compare with peers in their zone and internationally.

Class 2 Maths Olympiad Syllabus

In Class 2 the numbers grow to three digits, and Addition and Subtraction widen into Computation Operations. Four topics are new compared with Class 1: Capacity, Temperature, Lines and Pictographs.

The full class 2 Maths Olympiad syllabus:

Section 1: Numerals, Number Names and Number Sense (3-Digit Numbers); Computation Operations; Length; Weight; Capacity; Time; Temperature; Money; Lines, Shapes and Solids; Pictographs; Patterns.

Achievers Section: Higher Order Thinking Questions, with the syllabus as per Section 1.

On the day, your child gets an hour for 35 questions, and the top possible score is 45. Both levels share that layout. Guessing is safe, since CMO does not deduct marks for wrong answers. The questions stay close to school work but are pitched a notch harder. To see other classes, open the Maths Olympiad syllabus page.

How to prepare for Class 2 Maths Olympiad?

A good Class 2 plan is three or four short sessions a week, starting about six weeks before Level 1. Your child should do the work; you check it and talk it through afterwards.

Give each week a theme. Week one: 3-digit place value, comparing numbers like 406 and 460, and number names. Week two: computation, with carrying and borrowing. Week three: length, weight and capacity using a ruler, a kitchen scale and a measuring jug. Then time, temperature and money. Leave pictographs and patterns for last; they are quick to learn but need careful reading.

Next, work through the class 2 Maths Olympiad sample papers, then last year's paper from the list at the end of this section. Mark the questions that took too long. An hour for 35 questions works out to roughly 103 seconds each, so a child who spends four minutes on one pictograph will run short at the end.

Because Class 2 children sit the exam alone, do at least one practice run without help. The free trial test is a replica of the real exam, and the exam fee also covers two online practice tests. For printed practice, browse the Maths Olympiad books. If you would like a teacher to guide your child, CREST's preparation partner offers Olympiad Success online classes.
