Benefits of Maths Olympiad for Class 8

1. Strong algebra before Class 9. Identities, factorisation and linear equations in one variable are the base for the polynomials and coordinate geometry that follow. Olympiad practice makes them second nature.

2. Thinking beyond rote. A Class 8 reviewer wrote that CREST questions test concepts and make students think and apply their knowledge, which discourages rote learning and sharpens analytical skills.

3. A first look at the competitive world. Another Class 8 review says the Olympiad gave the writer a chance to explore competition and find out the level of their own knowledge.

4. Freedom to choose your slot. As one Class 8 testimonial puts it, you get to decide when you take the test, which makes it easier to fit around school.

How to prepare for Class 8 Maths Olympiad?

Class 8 has 16 topics, the longest list in CMO. A two-month plan with a fixed daily slot works better than weekend marathons.

Take the new topics one at a time. Learn squares up to 30 and cubes up to 15 so you recognise them instantly. Practise the standard identities until you can expand and factorise without writing every step. For Direct and Inverse Variations, ask yourself each time: if one quantity goes up, does the other go up or down? Read Introduction to Graphs questions slowly; the axis labels often hold the answer.

A CMO International Rank 1 holder from Class 8 treated theory and problem-solving as equally important. He started from the basics, built up the theory, then solved past papers, and for two years kept a strict routine: up at 7 am, studying by 8:30 am, with 15-minute breaks (see his Class 8 Hall of Fame profile). You don't have to copy the hours, but the order of basics, theory and then papers is worth following.

For papers, use the class 8 Maths Olympiad sample papers, then the previous year paper. Time yourself strictly: an hour for 50 questions means roughly 72 seconds each. The free trial mirrors the real exam, so take it at least once.

You'll find the CREST Class 8 workbook on the Maths Olympiad books page. Guided teaching is available through Olympiad Success online classes, from CREST's official preparation partner.
