What's new in Class 1

Coming from Senior KG, where the CMMO syllabus counts to 10, adds and subtracts small numbers and skip counts in 2s and 5s up to 20, Class 1 opens up in three ways:

• Numbers now run up to 100, with tens and ones, place value and the abacus.
• Multiplication and Division is a unit of its own for the first time: repeated addition, tables from 2 to 10, sharing into groups and the idea of a half.
• Measurement arrives, with units of length, weight, capacity and time, money, and reading a ruler, a weighing balance, a measuring container and a clock in pictures.

Class 1 paper at a glance

Each level is a 60-minute paper of 60 questions for 80 marks: 40 Basique questions at 1 mark each and 20 Avance questions at 2 marks each. Class 1 is parent or teacher assisted. An adult may help your child understand a question, but the child chooses the answer.

How to use this guide in Class 1

• Begin with Number and Number Names. Counting, before and after, and the >, < and = signs up to 100 come up in every other unit.
• Take Multiplication and Division slowly, since it is new this year. Start with repeated addition and grouping pictures before the tables.
• For Measurement, let your child read a real ruler, kitchen scale and clock alongside the picture questions.
• When a unit feels secure, try the free Class 1 Mental Maths worksheets and then the Class 1 CMMO sample paper together.

Number and Number Names

1. Counting objects up to 20 in pictorial form & Pictorial representation using cubes (numbers up to 100)
2. Number names (numbers less than 100)
3. Step counting of 2, 3, 5 and 10 starting from any number (numbers up to 100)
4. Representation in tens and ones up to 100
5. Understand the use of words before, after, successor, predecessor, more than, less than (numbers up to 100)
6. Arranging the given numbers in ascending and descending order (numbers up to 100)
7. Identify and usage of signs >, < and = (numbers up to 100)
8. Abacus representation (numbers up to 100)
9. Use of place value (numbers up to 100)

Addition and Subtraction

1. Solve problems on number bonds (numbers less than 100)
2. Pictorial representation of addition and subtraction using number line
3. Three digit addition (Problems on pictorial representation, missing numbers, carry over & commutative property of addition on numbers less than 100)
4. Three digit subtraction (Problems on pictorial representation, missing numbers & borrowing on numbers less than 100)
5. Subtraction of missing digits

Multiplication and Division

1. Use of multiplication as repeated addition
2. Use of multiplication tables to solve mathematical statements on multiplication (Tables from 2 to 10)
3. Understanding division using grouping and pictorial representation
4. Identify missing number in series - identifying if a certain number is multiples of 2, 3, 5 and 10
5. Concept of half and one-half

Measurement

1. Conversion of Unit of Measurement - (Length, Weight, Capacity, Time)
2. Money
3. Reading measurement in pictorial problems: Using a ruler, weighing balance, graduated container and clock

Geometry

1. Identification of horizontal, vertical and curved lines in a given figure
2. Pattern recognition in a shapes series and identifying the next shape in the series
3. Identify and count the number of a particular 2-D shape in a figure (circle, triangle, rectangle and square, etc.)
4. Identify 3-D shapes (cuboid, cube, cone, sphere, cylinder, etc.)
