    Factors and Multiples

The two important concepts of mathematics are factors and multiples. These concepts are generally studied together as they are linked to each other.

    Factors

Factors are numbers that can be divided into a given number without any remainder. They are used in mathematics to find the prime factors of a number, which are the factors that are only divisible by themselves and 1.

    Examples:

    1. The factors of 24 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12 and 24. These numbers can all divide into 24 without leaving a remainder.

    2. The factors of 18 are 1, 2, 3, 6, 9 and 18. These numbers can all divide into 18 without leaving a remainder.

Difference between Factors and Prime Factors

    FACTORS PRIME FACTORS
Factors are numbers that divide another number without leaving a remainder. Prime factors are factors that are also prime numbers.
    Factors of 45 are 1, 3, 5, 9, 15 and 45. Prime factors of 45 are 3 and 5 only.

    Multiples

Multiples in mathematics refer to the set of numbers that are produced by multiplying a given number by an integer. This means a multiple of a number is a product of that number with any integer. Multiples can be understood by the following figure.

    multiples

Example: The multiples of 13 are 13, 26, 39, 52, 65, 78, etc. The number being multiplied is called the base or the multiplier and the integers used to multiply it are called the factors. Multiples can also be represented using algebraic notation, such as 13n, where n is an integer.

Multiples of some numbers are given as follows:
