Eligibility Criteria for Class 5 Spell Bee Competition

a. Class 5 entry is open across all boards and countries. A school may put its students forward; families whose school stays out can sign up directly on the CREST website.

b. Level 1 is open to all; Level 2 is not. Places go to the leading 66.67% of Class 5 Level 1 candidates, with places also for the top 3 students a school registers, provided more than 25 from that school sit the Class 5 paper.

c. On the day, your child is alone at home with the webcam running. An attempt can be disqualified if anyone sits with your child, if the camera loses sight of the face, or if a mobile or calculator comes out.

d. The exam runs on a laptop, desktop or tablet only, never on a phone. Whichever you use needs a webcam, more than 11.5 inches of display and a stable internet connection; a Windows machine should be on Windows 8 or above, and a Mac or an iPad works too. Use the latest Google Chrome (Edge or Firefox are also fine); Safari is not supported.

e. The Rapid Fire section is played as audio, so test the speakers or headphones before the exam.

f. Slots are booked on the dashboard at least 2 days ahead, and changing one costs Rs. 40. The free trial test is a good first step before all of that.

Benefits of Class 5 Spell Bee Competition

1. Words from a children's book. A heading of words from Diary of a Wimpy Kid, such as bouquet, embarrass and ridiculous, joins the list in Class 5.

2. Proverbs and idioms for the first time. Sayings like 'Actions speak louder than words' and 'a piece of cake' are now part of the syllabus, and the paper adds a Word Ensemble section to test them.

3. Words that sound alike. Homonyms & Homophones, such as ate-eight and break-brake, train children to choose the spelling that fits the meaning.

4. A fair, well-timed paper. Good questions and a nice time limit get a mention in a Class 5 review, while a further Class 5 testimonial likes how the questions stay at the class level but come with a small twist.

How to prepare for Class 5 Spell Bee Competition?

Speed matters as much as spelling in Class 5: the hour has to cover 80 questions, about 45 seconds for each.

Start with the headings that carry whole sections. Learn a few Proverbs and Idioms each day and say what they mean, since Word Ensemble has 8 questions on them. For Homonyms & Homophones, write each pair in a sentence: ate-eight, break-brake.

Next, the long themed lists. Take STEM Words (galaxy, glacier, microscope), Government Affairs (parliament, ballot), Agriculture (harvest, poultry) and Household Items (refrigerator, utensil) one at a time, five or six words a session.

Give the spelling traps extra rounds: silent letters in campaign and psychology, and Evil Words such as mischief, restaurant and etiquette. CREST's word page for etiquette shows its meaning, usage examples and a short quiz.

Rapid Fire is a quarter of the paper, so keep up a daily dictation of ten words from the Class 1-5 lists.
