How to prepare for Class 6 Maths Olympiad?

Class 6 brings a lot of new chapters at once, so start early. Eight weeks is comfortable; give each week two or three chapters.

Spend extra time where Class 6 is new. In Integers, practise adding and subtracting negative numbers on a number line. In Algebra, get used to writing rules with letters, like 3n for "three times a number". For Ratio And Proportion, use recipes and map scales. For Playing with Numbers, revise factors and multiples. Practical Geometry and Mensuration are easier when you actually draw and measure.

Next, solve the Maths Olympiad questions for class 6 in the sample papers, and last year's paper. Note which chapters come up often. The marks distribution page tells you how much each section is worth.

Pace yourself at a little over a minute per question (72 seconds); the paper is 50 questions long and lasts an hour. In your last two weeks, do full timed papers, and sit the free practice test once so the proctoring feels routine.

One CREST achiever, CMO International Rank 2 in Class 6, studied each topic thoroughly as it was taught, finished the practice questions, kept roughly three parts study to one part break, and avoided cramming (her method is on her Class 6 Hall of Fame profile). For those practice questions, use CREST's own workbook, which you will find among the Maths Olympiad books. If you'd like coaching on top, the Olympiad trainer courses and test series from Olympiad Success, CREST's official preparation partner, are an option.
