Eligibility Criteria for Class 2 International English Olympiad

a. Class 2 is the first year children take the English Olympiad on their own. Having a parent or teacher sit beside them during the paper can lead to disqualification, so try a few solo practice sessions at home first.

b. Children in Class 2 anywhere in the world can apply for the English Olympiad for class 2. CBSE, ICSE, IB and State Board schools are all included, and CREST counts 6000+ participating schools.

c. Sign up on the CREST website yourself, or go through the school if it is enrolled.

d. At home, your child will need a laptop, desktop or tablet with a screen above 11.5 inches and the webcam switched on, plus a stable internet connection. A Windows device must have Windows 8 or above; a Mac or an iPad can be used as well. Use the latest Google Chrome (Edge or Firefox are fine too, but not Safari). Phones and calculators are not allowed, and your child's face must stay fully visible to the camera.

e. The class 2 English Olympiad online test is held in 2 levels. Two groups move on to Level 2: the top 55.56% of Class 2 Level 1 candidates, and the three highest-scoring school-registered students from every school that has more than 25 children in Class 2.

Benefits of English Olympiad for Class 2

1. Sharper spelling and word choice. Collocations, spellings and contractions are new on the Class 2 list. Knowing that we "make a wish" but "do homework", or that "don't" is short for "do not", shows up quickly in a child's writing.

2. English for real situations. Questions on thanking, greeting, asking permission and introducing yourself, plus reading short messages and invitations, practise the English a seven-year-old actually uses.

3. Concepts, not rote. In a Class 2 review, CREST gets credit for helping children build a strong base in concepts and see the practical reasoning behind them.

4. A first taste of competition. A published Class 2 testimonial calls the Olympiad a good initiative that builds enthusiasm for competitive exams, and this is the year ranks begin.

Class 2 English Olympiad Syllabus

Class 2 moves from word games to using English. Compared with Class 1, Collocations, Spellings, Adverbs, Contractions and Word Order are new, and two reading-and-speaking topics arrive: Information Retrieval from Various Texts, and Spoken and Written Expressions. Basic Tenses becomes Simple Tenses. Jumbled Letters, Making a Word, Word Pairs, Odd One Out, Feminine and Masculine, One and Many, Identify the Word From the Picture and Comprehension (Prose and Poetry) are no longer listed, and animals and their sounds now sit inside the Words topic.

Here is everything listed for Section 1 in the Class 2 English Olympiad syllabus:

Achievers Section: ten harder questions, which the syllabus calls Higher Order Thinking Questions, drawn from the seventeen topics above.

Format: 35 questions, 60 minutes and 45 marks, the same in Level 1 and Level 2. Each English Language question is worth 1 mark and each Achievers question 2, which is how 35 questions add up to 45 marks. No negative marking applies, so leaving a question blank never helps.

How to prepare for Class 2 English Olympiad?

Your child will sit this one alone, so build independence first. Over five or six weeks, let them do 20-minute practice sets by themselves, then go through the answers together afterwards. Keep school-day sessions short and save the full paper for a weekend morning.

Focus on what is new in Class 2. Make a "goes together" list of collocations: fast food, heavy rain, brush your teeth. Turn "can not" into "can't" and "I am" into "I'm". Jumble a short sentence like "park the went we to" and ask for the right order. Read a birthday invitation together and ask when and where the party is. Role-play a few polite lines: thanking a friend, greeting a teacher, asking to borrow a pencil.

Once the new topics feel familiar, your child can attempt the class 2 English Olympiad sample papers, then last year's paper. If your child needs a push, read together about the CREST rank holder who topped the Class 2 English Olympiad internationally in 2021-22 (see the Hall of Fame profile).

Time per question is about 1 minute 43 seconds (35 questions in 60 minutes). Practise one full timed paper a week in the final month, and use the free trial test to check the webcam and browser. Results of Class 2 English Olympiad

Class 2 is the first year with ranks, so results day feels different. Log in with your registered credentials, open the dashboard, then Performance, then Results, and select CEO. Level 1 scores are normally ready within 10 days of the last Level 1 answer key date, and Level 2 scores within a month of the last Level 2 answer key date.

The Level 1 result tells you whether your child cleared the cut-off for Level 2 (the rule is in the eligibility section above). Awards are based on Level 2. A Level 2 percentile of 96 or more earns gold, as does a zonal rank of 10 or less, while 93 to 96 brings silver and 90 to 93 bronze. The overall top 3 in the world receive an Achiever's Trophy.

One Class 2 review calls CREST a great platform for children to evaluate their performance. That is the right spirit for a seven-year-old: look at which topics went well, not only at the medal. If no medal comes this year, the Level 1 score is still a clear record of where your child started.
