Family and Family Members

A family is a special group of people who are all related to each other. It includes grandparents, parents, uncles, aunts, children, and cousins. They may or may not live in the same house.

Different types of Family

Nuclear family: When parents live with their children, it's called a nuclear family.

Joint family: If children, their parents, and their grandparents all live together in one house, it's called a joint family. Sometimes, other family members like uncles, aunts, and cousins also live in the same house.

How Family Members are Related?

Surname: Each of us has a name, and in a family, we have a common name that we share. It's called a surname. The surname helps identify our family and is usually written after our first name.

Relations in a Family

a) We all have a mother and a father. We may also have a sister or a brother, or both, who live with us in our family.
b) Our grandparents are the parents of our mother and father.
c) The parents of our mother are our maternal grandparents, and the parents of our father are our paternal grandparents.
d) Our mother's sister and our father's sister are our aunts.
e) Our mother's brother and our father's brother are our uncles.
f) The children of our uncles and aunts are our cousins.
g) We are the grandchildren (grandson/granddaughter) of our grandparents.
h) If you are a girl, you are called a niece to your aunt or uncle. If you are a boy, you are called a nephew to your aunt or uncle.
