Singular words are words that refer to only one individual, place, object or animal. We use singular words when we refer to one of something. Examples of singular words are doctor, gardener, fox, apartment, etc.
Plural words are those that refer to multiple people, places, objects or animals. When we refer to two or more of something we use plural words. Examples of plural words are angels, watches, bats, papers, etc.
There are many rules for changing singular words to plural. These are:
Rule 1: We add ‘-s’ to singular words to make them plural. For example, chimney-chimneys, park-parks, house-houses, etc.
Rule 2: We add ‘-es’ to singular words which end in -s, -ss, -sh, -ch and -x to make them plural. For example, bus-buses, church-churches, match-matches, etc.
Rule 3: We add ‘-es’ to singular words which end in ‘-o’ to make them plural. For example, mango-mangoes, hero-heroes, potato-potatoes, etc.
Rule 4: Singular words which end in -f or -fe are made plural by changing -f or -fe to ‘-ves’. For example, life-lives, shelf-shelves, self-selves, etc.
Rule 5: When a singular word ends in -y, we make them plural by changing -y to ‘-ies’. For example, army-armies, city-cities, lady-ladies, etc.
Rule 6: In a singular word when the final -y comes just after a vowel, the plural word is formed by adding ‘-s’. For example, key-keys, day-days, boy-boys, etc.
Rule 7: Some words do not follow any of the rules which are given above. Therefore, it is important to remember their singular and plural forms. For example, man-men, woman-women, foot-feet, etc.
Rule 8: Some words remain the same in singular or plural forms. For example, hair-hair, sheep-sheep, deer-deer, etc.
Rule 9: Words that are used after numerals never change. For example, dozen-dozen, score-score, pair-pair.
