    In this sentence ‘James’ is a naming word and ‘his’ is a pronoun.
  2. We visited our grandparent’s house this weekend.
    ‘We’ and ‘our’ are the two pronouns used in this sentence.
  3. I am going to school.
    In this sentence ‘I’ is a pronoun.

1. Singular Pronoun

  1. This type of pronoun is used in place of singular nouns or naming words.
  2. We use singular pronouns when we refer to a specific object, animal, or person.
  3. For example, I, you, me, him, her, she, his, it, etc.

I have a pet dog. ‘I’ is a singular pronoun.
→ Lisa is my sister. She is three years younger than me. Lisa is a naming word and ‘she’ is a singular personal pronoun.

2. Plural Pronoun

  1. This type of pronoun is used in place of plural nouns or naming words.
  2. We use plural pronouns when we indicate more than one person, animals or things.
  3. For example, us, we, they, them, their, etc.

Look at the following sentences:

We have an exam tomorrow. ‘We’ is a plural pronoun used in this sentence because there is more than one person.
They are flying kites. Since there is more than one subject, we used the plural pronoun ‘they’.

3. Personal Pronoun

  1. This type of pronoun is used to identify the speaker, person or thing which is being referred to.
  2. For example, I, you, he, she, him, her, me, we, they, them, us, etc.

→ The teacher is calling us. ‘Us’ is a personal pronoun.
→ Jessica loves to cook. She made some cookies. ‘She’ is a personal pronoun.

4. Possessive Pronoun

  1. This type of pronoun is used to show the ownership of something.
  2. For example, his, hers, its, whose, mine, yours, theirs, mine, etc.

→ These are his books. ‘His’ shows the ownership of books.

5. Reflexive Pronoun
