  • What are Adjectives?

    A word used with a noun to describe or point out, the person, animal, place or thing, which the noun names is called an adjective. They help us know these nouns better by telling us about their traits. 

    Here Are Some Examples of Adjective

    1. Jack is a naughty boy. 
    2. The loud thunder scared us.
    3. Jonas is my good friend. 
    4. The tiny puppy curled up in a cosy bed.
    5. It was the most delicious pizza, I’ve ever eaten.
    6. I have a green pencil case.

    Highlighted words in the above examples are called adjectives. They help to describe the nouns and make sentences more precise and easy to understand.

    Types of Adjectives

    1. Adjectives of Quality

    Adjectives of quality which are also known as descriptive adjectives are words that help to describe. They tell us what type or how something is. a noun. It could be a person, place, object, or idea.

    Examples:

    → I wore a colourful dress to the party.
    → My mother cooked tasty pasta for dinner.

    2. Adjectives of Quantity

    Adjectives of quantity are words that help to describe how much or how many of something there are. They contribute to providing more information about nouns in terms of amount.

    Examples:

    → My class teacher gave us several exciting science fiction books to read.
    → Maria's brother has a lot of toys in his box.

    3. Adjectives of Number

    Adjectives of numbers are similar to adjectives of quantity. They help to describe how many of something there are. They contribute to providing more information about nouns in terms of amount.

    Examples:

    → There are five beautiful roses in my garden.
    → She has twelve friends at school.

    4. Demonstrative Adjectives

    Demonstrative adjectives help to point out or identify specific nouns. They tell us which one or ones we're referring to. 

    Examples: 

    These boots are mine.
    This bag is so heavy.

    5. Possessive Adjectives

    Possessive adjectives help to show who owns something. They tell us to whom something belongs. 

    Examples:

    → Is this your jacket?
    → That is Jack’s soccer ball.

    Degrees of Comparison

    Adjective degrees allow us to define things in different ways, such as whether something is big, bigger or biggest. 

    There are three degrees of adjectives:

    1. Positive Degree

    A positive degree of adjective describes something directly without any comparison.

    Example: The cat is small.

    2. Comparative Degree

    A comparative degree of adjective is used to compare two things or people and specify which one has more or less of a quality.

    Example: The cat is smaller than the dog.

    3. Superlative Degree

    A superlative degree of adjective is used when we compare one thing or person to a group and specify that it has the most or the least quality.

    Example: Among the three animals shown in the image, the ant is the smallest.
