    Vowels and Consonants

    1. Vowels: Vowels are one of the groups of English alphabets which represent open sound. It includes letters like a, e, i, o and u. We use the article "an" before every vowel.

    2. Consonants: Consonants are the other group of English alphabets. All the letters except for vowels are known as consonants. For example, b, c, d, f, g, h and more. We use the article 'an' before every consonant except letters that are vowels or make the sound of vowels.

    What are Articles?

    Articles are words that are used before nouns and help us to know whether we are talking about something in general or specific.

    Examples of Articles in a Sentence

    Article Grade 1

    → I will eat an orange for breakfast.
    → Emily is a great dancer.
    → Here is the store that you are looking for.
    → Take an umbrella with you because it is raining.
    → I am driving my car to the office.
    → Today I met a friendly cat.

    Types of Articles

    The following are the two types of articles. These are:

    1. A

    Article "a" is used before words that start with a consonant sound and alphabets other than vowels. It is used before singular nouns that are not specific.

    For example, I saw a dog running on the road.

    2. An

    Article "an" is used before words that begin with a vowel (a, e, i, o, u). It is also used before singular nouns that are not specific.

    For example, An elephant is a large animal.

    3. The

    Article "the" is used to define a specific noun.

    For example, I am in the bus.
