    What are Phonics?

Phonics is a method used to teach children how to read and spell by helping them understand the relationship between letters and their sounds in the English language.

    1. Letter-Sound Correspondence: Phonics begins with teaching kids the sounds that individual letters and letter combinations make.

For example, The letter "A" can make two sounds:

→ Short 'a' sound, as in "art"
→ Long 'a' sound, as in "fade."

The letter "S" makes the 's' sound, as in "snake."

    2. Blending Sounds: Children should learn to blend or combine the individual sounds of letters to read words. For example: A + R + T = Art

    3. Phonemic Awareness: Rhyming concepts in phonemics is a fun and engaging way to develop phonological awareness. Here are some rhyming concepts and words you can use:

    For example,

    → Cat and hat
    → Dog and log
    → Sun and fun
    → Bed and red
    → Pig and wig

    Vowels and Consonants

Vowels and consonants are important elements in the English language. They are the building blocks of words. For learning spellings, it's necessary to get introduced to vowels and consonants.

Vowels: Vowels are letters that make sounds when we say them and they are essential in forming words. There are five vowel letters: A, E, I, O and U.

How do they work together to make spelling words?

Words are usually made up of a combination of vowels and consonants.

    Examples:

    → The word "castle" has both consonants C, S, T, L and vowels A, E.
    → The word "meal" has a consonant M, L followed by a vowel E, A.

    Basic Rules for Spelling Words

    1. CVC (Consonant-Vowel-Consonant) Words: Words often follow the pattern of one consonant, one vowel and one consonant. For example, BUY - b and y are consonants and u is a vowel.

    2. Silent "e" Rule: When a word ends with an "e," it often makes the vowel before saying its name.

    Examples:

→ kite (silent "e" makes the "i" long)
→ cape (silent "e" makes the "a" long)

    3. Doubling Consonants: When adding a suffix to a word that ends with a single vowel followed by a single consonant, double the final consonant.

    Examples:

    → hop becomes hopping
    → run becomes running
    → book
    → hook
    → cook
    → took
