    A preposition is a word that shows the relationship between a noun or pronoun and other words in a sentence.

    Read the following sentences

    1. The book is on the table.
    2. He is in school.
    3. The fox jumped off the wall

    All the above underlinedwords like on, in, off are words that tell you the position of an object or person.

    Prepositions for Class 1

    Such words which tell you the position in relation to something else are called prepositions.

    Examples of Common Prepositions

    → William is at his friend's house.
    → Your shoes are kept under the bed.
    → The chocolates are in the fridge.
    → Raymond is hiding behind a bush.
    → The Bluetooth speaker is kept next to the TV.
    → I have parked my car in front of your house.
    → The dog ran towards the door.
    → Rohan loves to jump on the bed.

    Prepositions for Class 1

    Uses of Different Prepositions in a Sentence

    1. At

    We use ‘at’ to indicate a specific point in time or a specific location.
    For example: I have a meeting at 5:00 pm.

    2. On

    To indicate the day, date or surface we use ‘on’.
    For example: My dog loves to sleep on my couch.

    3. In

    ‘In’ is used to indicate a location within a larger area, box or container.
    For example: My city is located in India.

    4. Out

    Whenever we want to indicate a movement from inside space to outside we use ‘on’.
    For example: My dad went out to bring groceries.

    5. Of

    ‘Of ’ is often used to indicate the material or origin of something.
    For example: This sweater is made of wool.

    6. Under

    ‘Under’ is used for a position which is below or covered by something.
    For example: All my old toys are kept under my bed.

    7. Above

    ‘Above’ is used for a position which is higher than something else.
    For example: A bird flew above the tree.

    8. Near

    We use ‘near’ to indicate closeness to something.
    For example: This place is near to my school.

    9. Over

    ‘Over’ is used to indicate movement above something.
    For example: The cat jumped over the fence.
