From Class 2 onwards your child answers the CSB paper with no adult nearby, which changes how practice should feel. This Spell Bee (Summer) book for Class 2 gives your child room to work alone and check answers afterwards. Does it still use the Class 1 words?

Yes, and it has to. The Class 2 syllabus folds in the whole Class 1 list and adds new headings such as Insects, Everyday Items and Our Environment. Expect hippopotamus and chimpanzee next to cat and cow, grasshopper and caterpillar next to frog. In the free Spell-o-Spell chapter, which has four solved examples followed by 160 questions, a child has to pick butterfly out from betterfly and butterfli, spot that elbo has lost its w, and notice that baran should be barn. Later questions test kingfisher, chirp and bounce, and ask which of four words is wrong, as with succes or toung.

Which chapter needs the most time?

Word Cookie. It carries 12 of the 40 questions in the hour-long paper, more than any other section. Spell-o-Spell and Word Connection follow with 8 each, and Mingle-Mangle, Picture Speak and Word Chain have 4 apiece. If your child finishes a Word Cookie set quickly, ask them to say aloud which letter was wrong; that habit carries straight into the exam.

The book closes with a previous year paper meant for a single 60-minute go, then the answer key.
