Eighty questions in one hour is the new pace from Class 5, about 45 seconds each. The Spell Bee workbook for Class 5 grows with the paper, from six practice chapters to nine. It is on sale in two forms, a full-colour PDF and a printed edition in black and white, both available from the Olympiad books page.

What is new in the Class 5 book?

Three chapters appear for the first time, each matching a new exam section. Word Melody asks your child to write words from their phonetics. Word Ensemble covers idioms and proverbs, so "once in a blue moon" and "Actions speak louder than words" are fair game. Mathlish mixes spelling with a little Maths and asks which word is spelt wrongly. The full list:

Is the free chapter a fair sample?

It gives a good idea of the level. Spell-o-Spell has four solved examples and 90 practice questions, and the explanations point at the exact trouble spot: tuition has an i after the u that is often missed, and embarrassed needs a double r and a double s. Many words come from the Class 5 headings, so parliament, freedom and domestication turn up misspelt as parliment, fredom and domestecation. The Class 1 to 4 lists also count this year, which is why older words keep reappearing.

The book closes with one CREST previous year paper (allow an hour for it) and the answer key.
