Class 6 is the final year in which CREST publishes a word list for the Spell Bee (Summer), and it is a long one, with the Class 1 to 5 lists included as well. The CSB book for Class 6 helps a student work through it in an organised way. Order it as a PDF (colour) or a printed copy (black and white) on the Olympiad books page.

Which words does the Class 6 book test?
Plenty of science and medicine, since STEM Words and Professionals/Doctors are both on the list. Spell-o-Spell, which you can read free above, has 90 practice questions after four solved examples. It asks students to recognise spleen, peninsula, pipette and observatory, and to catch errors such as satelite, seismoligy and gynaecolagist. Ordinary words get the same care: consentrate is corrected to concentrate, and foalk to folk, each with its meaning. Some later questions hinge on doubled letters: summitt has one t too many, and webed is missing a b.
Each chapter after that matches a section of the 80-question paper. Word Makeup and Word Cookie carry 10 questions each in the exam, while Word Connection, Word Ensemble and Mathlish carry 8.
Making the most of the previous year paper
Keep it until the whole syllabus is covered, as the preface advises, and sit it in an hour with a timer. Mark it with the answer key at the back, then list every word you got wrong and look each one up in the Oxford Learner's Dictionary, the reference CREST uses for British spellings and meanings. Words like colonel, pneumonia and renaissance are worth a second round.
