There is no CREST word list in Class 7. Every word in Level 1 and Level 2 comes from Wren and Martin's High School English Grammar and Composition, and the Class 7 workbook is written with that in mind. Printed copies are black and white and the PDF is in colour; order either from the Olympiad books page, or read the first chapter free above.

Why does the Class 7 book ask for meanings?

At this level, knowing a word means knowing what it says as well as how it is spelt. So Spell-o-Spell changes shape: each question shows four words, some of them misspelt, and asks for the meaning of the one that is right (or wrong). In a solved example, the row reads acheive, knowledge, grateful, absence; the misspelt word is acheive, so the answer is its meaning, "to accomplish". Another practice row gives sieze, releive, specimen and hiefer, and only specimen is spelt correctly. The free chapter has four such examples and 95 practice questions.

How does it fit with Wren and Martin?

Several questions use grammar terms of the kind Wren and Martin teaches: vowel appears spelt correctly, while consonant, preposition, pronoun and possessive turn up misspelt for the child to catch. Reading Wren and Martin a chapter or two a week and doing the matching workbook sets keeps both going together. The remaining chapters follow the 80-question paper:

  1. Spell-o-Spell
  2. Word Connection
  3. Word Makeup
  4. Mingle-Mangle
  5. Picture Speak
  6. Word Cookie
  7. Word Melody
  8. Word Ensemble
  9. Mathlish
  10. Previous Year Paper
  11. Answer Key

Rapid Fire, the 20-question audio round, is practised by dictation, ideally from a notebook of the words your child stumbles on while reading.

Students in the top 66.67% of Class 7 in Level 1 go on to Level 2, where the words still come from the same book. Try the previous year paper in an hour once the chapters are finished.
