Two big things change in Class 3. The paper grows to 60 questions in an hour, and a listening round called Rapid Fire appears, where a word is played as audio and your child writes it down. The CREST workbook for the Class 3 Spell Bee covers the written sections, and you can buy it in colour as a PDF or in print through the Olympiad books page.
Inside the book:
Word Makeup is new this year and Word Chain has gone, exactly as in the exam. Rapid Fire has no chapter, since it can only be practised by ear.
Spell-o-Spell, downloadable above, opens with four solved examples and then 120 questions. The tricks get sneakier. In one, digest is the only correct word in a row that also holds frowun, exsite and aiche. In another, a child must see that connclude carries an extra n, or that immitate should have one m. Plenty come from the current list: knock, business and weekend, for instance. Others are slipped in from earlier years (hippopotamus is a Class 2 word), since the Class 1 and Class 2 lists are part of this syllabus too.
Rapid Fire is 20 of the 60 questions, a third of the paper. Ten words a day, read aloud by you and written by your child, covers it well. Pick from the trickier headings: silent letters like knead and Wednesday, plural rules such as loaf-loaves, and the Evil Words heading, where rhythm and shepherd live. Before the exam, check that sound plays properly on the desktop, laptop or tablet your child will use.
The workbook ends with a past CREST paper to try in an hour and the answers to every chapter.
