Olympiad Exams in Malaysia

i) International Junior Math Olympiad (IJMO)

The International Junior Math Olympiad (IJMO) is an international Math competition held annually in various Asian countries. The IJMO is organized by SIMCC in collaboration with the National Math Societies of Asian countries to identify and nurture potential young Math talent in each SIMCC participating country.

To be eligible to participate in the IJMO, each year only SASMO and AMO Gold and Silver Award winners from each country are selected to represent their country.

Aim

IJMO aims to provide students with an Asian platform to interact and compete with worthy opponents. The IJMO is the ideal platform for all students to showcase their Mathematical potential and talent on the international Mathematics competition stage!

IJMO questions are carefully designed to develop each student's higher level conceptual understanding and reasoning skills. This effectively extends each student's potential beyond grade level, enabling them to better apply their advanced logical and analytical skills to solve the challenging problems of the Mathematical Olympiad.

Exam structure

Section A: Each of the questions from 1 to 10 is worth 2 points.

Section B: Each of the questions from 11 to 20 is worth 3 points.

Section C: Each of the questions from 21 to 30 is worth 5 points.

ii) International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO)

The International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) has become a prestigious international Chemistry competition for secondary school students with no special Chemistry background.

The International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) aims to stimulate the activities of students interested in Chemistry by a way of independently and creatively solving chemical problems.

IChO helps adults from different countries and promotes cooperation and international understanding.

iii) Malaysian Biology Olympiad (MBO)

The Malaysian Biology Olympiad (MBO) is a Biology contest for secondary school to pre-university students. The competition is held in three series every year. The official language of the MBO is English and the tests cover biological problems and experiments.

Level of examination

MBO is performed in several series. The primary selection test will be conducted online and can be accessed from all over the country. The top 100 students from all over the country will be selected to participate in the first workshop held at Pusat PERMATApintar Negara, Kebangsan University, Malaysia. A second judging will then take place during the workshop. At the end of the 5-day workshop, students complete an off-level Biology test. For the second workshop, 60 of the best candidates will be selected. From there, the final number of students selected will be six, with four selected to represent their country at this year's International Biology Olympiad.

Evaluation and Prizes

  1. A student's final ranking is based on equally weighted scores for theoretical and practical tasks according to the T-score method.
  2. Students' individual works, tasks and answer sheets will be assessed and scored by the creators of the competition tasks and solutions.
  3. The national jury is required to announce the official results along with the awards given to individual students.

The number of medals is limited.

  1. The Gold medal is about 10% of the participants,
  2. About 20% of the participants receive Silver medals.
  3. Bronze medal approximately for 30% of participants
  4. Each participant will receive a certificate acknowledging participation in the Malaysian Biology Olympiad.

iv) Malaysia Computing Olympiad

The MCC (Malaysian Computing Challenge) is an annual online competition open for primary, secondary school and pre-university students who are: either studying in Malaysia or a Malaysian Citizen Studying Abroad and born after July 1, 2003.

Exam format

The participant has to solve 4 to 6 problems within a 2 day window. Participants can work on the competition anywhere, including their homes. Problem statements are available in both English and Malaysian.

Beyond MCC

MCC is a pre-selection process for a year-long program designed to identify and develop top Computer talent in Malaysian schools. MCC's top scorers are -

I. Invited to a training camp where they are familiarized with Algorithms and Algorithmic thinking.

II. Invited to the Malaysian Computing Olympiad (MCO), a programming competition.

III. MCOs top scorers are called to a series of intense training camps conducted by veteran Olympiad athletes. Students with this level of qualification compete in the Asia-Pacific Information Olympiad (APIO), an annual online competition between countries in the Pacific Rim. After a training camp and APIO, four students are selected to represent Malaysia at the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) in Hungary.

Registration

Students who are interested in participating in the MCC need to talk to their school teacher about sending a team. If student’s school does not send a team then student can register as an independent participant.
