Olympiad Exams in Brazil

i) Brazilian Olympiad in Informatics (OBI)

The Brazilian Olympiad of Informatics (OBI, Portuguese) is a competition organized by the Brazilian Computing Society (SBC) and is one of Brazil's Science Olympiads, among Mathematics, Physics and Astronomy and others.

Categories, Levels and Rounds

There are two main categories in the competition, one for high school students (the Programming Category) and the other for elementary kids (the Logic Category).

At OBI, participants are separated into groups based on their knowledge levels and these categories are further divided into levels based on the age and academic year of each candidate.

The OBI's categories are as follows:

Logic Category:

Level 1, which is for students in elementary to 7th grade

Level 2, which is for students in elementary to 9th grade

Programming Category:

Level 1, for students in their 1st year of High School

Level 2, for students up to the 3rd year of High School or already enrolled
in High School until December of the previous year and not more than 20 years old on July 1 of the year in which the competition takes place.

ii) National Biology Olympiad - Brazil

The Brazil National Biology Olympiad is open for High School students who are not older than 19 years old. NBO is conducted in 3 rounds.

Structure and Organization

The 1st round takes place in the registered schools and is conducted by the High School teachers. The 1st round test consists of 30 multiple choice questions and has only eliminatory character. About 5% of the top students who appeared for the 1st round qualify for the 2nd round.

The 2nd round contains 100 multiple-choice questions. The sixteen highest-ranked students are selected for the third round and final rounds.

The 3rd round takes place at the Instituto Butantan and includes a week of practical training and assessment. The top four students from this round are selected to participate in the International Biology Olympiad (IBO). 5th to 8th place is selected to participate in the Ibero-American Biology Olympiad.

Prizes

  1. There is no prize for the kids who clear the 1st round.
  2. 150 medals (Gold, Silver and Bronze) are awarded to those who clear the 2nd round.
  3. The 3rd round chooses the students who might compete in regional and International Olympiads, but no prizes are given to the participants.
  4. All of the NBO's participating students are awarded certificates.
  5. Some public universities are providing entrance to national and international Scientific Olympiad medalists, using a composite score of all the medals received by the student.

iii) Brazilian Mathematics Olympiad (OBM)

The Brazilian Mathematics Olympiad (OBM) is a contest for students of elementary schools (from the 6th year onwards), High School students and university students from public and private institutions across Brazil. The Brazilian Mathematics Olympiad (OBM) is conducted in 4 levels.

Objectives of OBM

Encourages student’s to participate in the Olympiads in order to make a decisive impact on the progress of Mathematics education in Brazil.
Chooses who will represent Brazil in International Mathematics competitions based on their results in the OBM.
