What is inside the Class 1 Mental Maths book?

The five chapters follow the five topics of the Class 1 syllabus for the CREST Mental Maths Olympiad (CMMO). The free chapter, Number and Number Names, has 100 multiple-choice questions, each with four options, and most of them are built around pictures. Children count rockets, ducks and frogs, tell tens from ones, find the number that comes just before 60 and pick out skip counting in 5s and 10s. One question asks how many beads an abacus needs to show 87.

After the chapters comes a CREST previous year paper. The preface suggests your child sits it in one hour once the syllabus is done, which gives a fair picture of readiness. The answer key is at the end of the book.

How does the Class 1 book help with the CMMO?

The Class 1 paper is parent/teacher-assisted and has 60 questions in an hour, so there is roughly a minute for each one. Working through a chapter a few questions at a time, saying the answers aloud instead of writing sums, builds exactly the habit the exam rewards. Class 1 children often slow down on longer word questions, so read those out slowly and let your child picture the story first.
