What Do You Mean by Adjectives?

Adjectives are words that characterise or add to nouns (people, places, objects, or ideas). They describe how something seems, feels, sounds, tastes or smells to us.

For example, "The cute puppy is playful", the adjectives "cute" and "playful" indicate what the animal looks like and how it behaves.

Types of Adjectives

1. Adjectives of Quality

Adjective of quality also known as a descriptive adjective, is a word that characterises or provides further information about a noun by describing its quality or trait.

Examples: 

→The principal of my kid's school is a great person.
→Russia is a developed country among all. 
→Delhi Hatt is a big market of Delhi.

2. Proper Adjectives

A proper adjective is a word that characterises a specific noun and is usually derived from the name of a certain person, place or thing. They start with a capital letter.

Examples: 

→Those French fries were delicious.
→They visited the Chinese restaurant for dinner.
→The Eiffel Tower is a famous monument in Paris.

3. Adjectives of Number

Adjectives of number are words that inform us how many of something there are. They assist us in describing the number or quantity of nouns in a sentence. 

Examples:

→ They bought three tickets to the concert.
→ The first step to be a successful is to do hard work.
→ There were nine members in the room.

4. Demonstrative Adjectives

A demonstrative adjective is a phrase that helps us point to something specific. It tells us what we're talking about. The demonstrative adjectives are as follows: "this", "that", "these" and "those."

Examples:

→This novel is so engrossing that I cannot help but read it.
→ That sleek feline prowled gracefully through the moonlit garden.
→These cookies are not only quite crunchy but also very delicious.
→Gone are those memorable days of childhood.

5. Distributive Adjective

A distributive adjective is a word that describes things or people one at a time rather than all at once. It aids us in determining which one we are discussing in a group.

Examples: 

→Each student will narrate the poem.
→Every flower in the garden is beautiful.
→Both friends enjoyed the lunch together.

6. Interrogative Adjective

An interrogative adjective is a word that aids in the formulation of queries regarding nouns (people, places, or things). It assists us in learning more about the noun. 

Examples:

→Which flower do you want to gift among these? 
→Whose water bottle is this? 
→How much did this dress cost you? 

7. Adjectives of Quantity

Adjectives of quantity are terms that inform us how much or how many of something there is. They assist us in describing the quantity or number of a noun in a sentence. 

Examples: 

→There are many colourful marbles.
→Only a few students will be able to complete this task on time.
→I saw several animals in the zoo.

8. Possessive Adjective

Possessive adjectives are words that indicate possession or ownership. They inform us who owns something.

Examples: 

→I cannot believe that you broke my glasses.
→Shelly's thoughts are too complex.
→Their favourite maths teacher did not come today.
