What are Articles?

Articles are words that appear before nouns to provide information about them. The articles "a," "an," and "the" are classified as definite and indefinite. They play a crucial role in defining the meaning of a phrase or a sentence and serve as a tool to assist in specifying and identifying nouns in sentences.

Types of Articles

There are two kinds of articles: Definite and Indefinite

Definite Article

Definite article is used before nouns to specify or identify a particular person, place, thing or idea. There is only one definite article that is "the."

Understand it further with some examples:

→ The cat is sleeping under the table.

Here, "the" is the definite article and is used before the noun "cat" to refer to a specific cat.

→ Kids visited the zoo yesterday.

Here, "the" is used before the noun "zoo" to indicate a specific zoo.

→ Susan is the girl I'm visiting.

Here, "the" is used before the noun "girl" to indicate a specific girl who is Susan.

→ The camel is called the ship of the desert.

Here, "the" is used before the noun "camel" to indicate a specific animal.

Indefinite Articles

Indefinite articles are used before nouns to show that the noun is not a specific person, place or thing. There we have two indefinite articles which are "a" and "an".

→ Ariana has a book in her bag.

Here "a" is used before a consonant sound and it does not specify a particular book.

→ Jack ate an apple.

Here "an" is used before a vowel sound.

→ Gold is a yellow metal.

Here "a" is used before a consonant sound and it does not specify a particular metal.

→ Ron used to come back within an hour.

Here "an" is used before a vowel sound.

→ My father is an Engineer.

Here "an" is used before a vowel sound.

→ An apple fell from the tree.
