Meaning: Read means to look at written words and understand what they say.

Sounds like: reed (a tall, thin grass that grows near water); red (the colour of a ripe tomato)

How do you spell read?

Syllables: read

Tricky part: Read sounds like reed today but like red in 'I read it yesterday', and the spelling never changes. Writing reed (a plant) or red (a colour) in its place is the usual slip.

Watch out for: reede, reaid

Memory tip: Today I read a book, yesterday I read a book: it sounds different, but it is the same four letters both times.
