Solved Questions on Capacity

1. Fill in the blanks:

96 pints = ________ gallons

a) 6
b) 8
c) 12
d) 16

Answer: c) 12

Explanation: 1 Gallon = 8 Pints
96 pints = 96 ÷ 8 = 12 gallons

2. A bathtub can hold 150 litres of water. If Jenny fills the tub with a bucket that carries 15 litres of water, how many buckets of water does she need to fill the bathtub?

cmo-capacity-c3-5

a) 5 buckets

b) 10 buckets

c) 15 buckets

d) 20 buckets

Answer: b) 10 buckets

Explanation: Quantity of water a bathtub can hold = 150 L

Quantity of water bucket can hold = 15 L

The number of buckets needed to fill 150 litres = 150 ÷ 15

                                                                    = 10 buckets

Thus, Jenny needs 10 buckets to fill the bathtub.

3. The capacity of a tank is 1500 Quarts. What is the total capacity of given tanks in Pints?

cmo-capacity-c3-6

a) 10500 Pints
b) 21000 Pints
c) 15750 Pints
d) 42000 Pints

Answer: b) 21000 Pints

Explanation: Capacity of a tank = 1500 Quarts
Capacity of 7 tanks = 7 × 1500 Quarts
                               = 10500 Quarts

We know that 1 Quart = 2 Pints

Capacity of 7 tanks in Pints = 10500 × 2 Pints = 21000 Pints

4. The capacity of a cooker is 4 L 200 mL. What is the capacity of such three cookers in mL?

cmo-capacity-c3-7

a) 4200 mL
b) 8400 mL
c) 10600 mL
d) 12600 mL

Answer: d) 12600 mL

Explanation: Capacity of a cooker = 4 L 200 mL
= 4 L + 200 mL
= 4 × 1000 mL + 200 mL
= 4000 mL + 200 mL
= 4200 mL

Capacity of such three cookers in mL = 3 × 4200 mL
                                                      = 12600 mL

5. A washing machine can take 12 L of water and 65 mL of liquid detergent to clean clothes. What is its total capacity in mL?

cmo-capacity-c3-8

a) 12065 mL
b) 12165 mL
c) 12250 mL
d) 12650 mL

Answer: a) 12065mL

Explanation: Total capacity of machine to hold water and liquid detergent = 12 L + 65 mL
= 12 × 1000 mL + 65 mL
= 12000 mL + 65 mL
= 12065mL
