Addition is a way of combining things and counting them together as one large group. In other words, it means calculating the total of two or more numbers by combining them.

Let’s try to understand it with the help of some diagrams.

Add the numbers of apples in Figure 1 and Figure 2 given below:

    Example of Addition

    The total number of apples is 6 + 6 = 12

Again, add the number of cats in Figure 1 and Figure 2 given below:

And the total number of cats in Figure 1 and Figure 2 is 2 + 7 = 9

This is the way we add numbers.

    Addition by Counting

    One-digit numbers:

Amit has 5 candies in his bag. His father bought 4 more candies and placed them in his bag. How many candies are there in Kate’s bag?

The total number of candies can be calculated by counting all the candies one by one.

    Two-digit numbers:

    Addition for 2-digit number

In the addition of two-digit numbers, we come across the concept of carryover

    Addition of two digit

When the sum of the digits in the units' place is equal to or greater than 10, the final digit of this sum remains unchanged in the units' place, while the tens' digit of the sum is transferred to the tens' place as a carryover.

For example: In the picture given above, 24 is added to 67.

When we add the digits at the unit’s place, (7 + 4), we obtain 11 which is greater than 10. So, we will keep the unit’s place as it is (1). And take the digit at the ten’s place of the carryover (1) to the ten’s place of the given numbers (6 and 2). Now we will add (6 + 2 + 1) = 9

Hence, our total sum = 91.

    Addition using number line

Example: Jim has 4 apples. Tim has 5 apples. How many apples are there in total?

We can do this using the number line as shown:
