Word: Ordinal

Part of Speech: Adjective

Meaning: Showing position in a series, such as first, second or tenth. An ordinal number tells you the order, while a cardinal number (one, two, ten) tells you how many.

How to Spell Ordinal

Syllables: or - di - nal

Tricky part: The middle is di, not de, and the word ends in al, not el or le.

Watch out for: ordinel, ordenal, ordinle

Memory tip: Ordinal numbers tell you the order, and ordinal starts with the same three letters as order: o-r-d.

Usage Examples

Example 1: Tenth is an ordinal number.

Example 2: Write the ordinal form of twenty-two.

Example 3: Our teacher made us list the planets with ordinal numbers, from first to eighth.
