Spell Bee Word: numeral

Basic Details

Word: Numeral

Part of Speech: Noun

Meaning: A symbol or a group of symbols that stands for a number, such as 7, 25 or the Roman numeral X.

Synonyms: digit, figure

How to Spell Numeral

Syllables: nu - mer - al

Tricky part: The middle vowel is e and the end is al. When said fast it sounds like numrul, so letters go missing.

Watch out for: numerel, numaral, numrel

Memory tip: Take number, drop the b, and add al: numer + al. The e stays where it was in number.

Usage Examples

Example 1: The clock in the old church uses Roman numerals.

Example 2: Write the answer in numerals, not in words.

Example 3: The numeral 0 was a big step forward in mathematics.

Fun Fact

The numerals 0 to 9 that we use came to Europe from India through Arab mathematicians, which is why they are called Hindu-Arabic numerals.
