Spell Bee Word: Decimal

What does decimal mean?

Word: Decimal

Part of Speech: Noun

Meaning: Decimal means a number that uses a dot, called a decimal point, to show parts smaller than one, such as 0.5 or 2.75. As an adjective it means based on the number ten.

How do you spell decimal?

Syllables: dec - i - mal

Tricky part: The s sound after de- is spelt with a c, so take care not to write desimal.

Watch out for: desimal, decimmal

Memory tip: Think of the Latin decem, ten, which also gave us December: decimal keeps the same c straight after de-.
