Meaning: Croissant means a soft, flaky bread roll made with lots of butter and shaped in a curve. It first became popular in France and is often eaten at breakfast.

How do you spell croissant?

Syllables: crois - sant

Tricky part: The word is French, so the spelling does not match the sound. Children leave out the i (crossant) or one s (croisant), and the t at the end is quiet.

Watch out for: crossant, croisant, croissont, crosant

Memory tip: A croissant has two pointed ends curling round. Give it two s's in the middle, one for each end.
