Unveiling the surprising win
About Anannya Shah

Anannya is a grade 5 student, an author and a traveller who also loves to sing and dance.

At the crack of dawn, I woke up as the radiant sunlight scattered and sliced through my window. My alarm kept ringing and troubling my ears until I stopped it and rushed to get ready for school, as today we had an Eloquence competition. I had burnt the midnight oil practising for it.

As I reached the kitchen, the aroma of the delicious delicacies tickled my nose. I ate my luscious pancakes and drank chocolate milk in a jiffy. My dad honked and called me to the car as we were almost late for school. I took my grandparents' blessings and left for school.

Most of the students were rehearsing their dialogues. I was feeling anxious as I wasn't doing any practice. I kept my calm and, with a sound mind, sat on my chair.

From left and right, north and south, all around me, dialogues were being whispered. I was trying hard not to forget my dialogues, so I just closed my ears. Within 10 minutes, the bell rang, and roll numbers were called by my teacher.

It was my turn. I was having mixed feelings; my stomach was churning, but I was also excited to present my speech, as I had really practised it with effort over the weekend.

Soon, I presented my script with confidence and the right voice modulation. My topic was "How to Solve the Problem of Mobile Scrolling and Phubbing." I received accolades and appreciation.

After my turn, my friends presented one by one. Every child had worked hard.

Finally, it was the moment of truth. I was keeping my fingers crossed, as I had never won before. Twice, I had fallen sick before the Eloquence competition in the last two years.

Also, no one in my family had ever won something like this. I wanted to make them feel proud.

"Yippee! My name was announced; I was the winner of the Eloquence competition, and I was on cloud nine."

When I reached home with a medal and a certificate, my family had tears of joy in their eyes. They hugged me and felt proud.

And, not to guess, I received a dinner party and a few gifts too.
